How to Build an Affordable Log Home

The first step is to find property to build your home on. Then make a floor plan. Your building site will influence your floor plan. You probably won't find the perfect plan in a book or magazine. Most likely you will have to come up with your own ideas until you get a plan close to what you want. After you have a floor plan you can discuss roof options. Determine your roof design, then Moose Log Homes can complete your plans. The cost for a working set of plans is $.50 per square foot. Once you have your plans in hand you can start the footwork.

If you are not going to build your home yourself, then you will want to find a local reputable builder. The builder does not need experience with building log homes. Any builder can build with our logs. Our logs are delivered precut with a wall plan showing where each log goes. Someone from our company will come and work with you or your builder erecting the log walls. The log walls will be the easiest part of the project. Remember, the best builder for the job may not be the builder who has worked with logs before.

Once you have found a builder that you like and trust, you need to decide who is going to do the footwork lining up the sub-contractors. If the builder becomes the general contractor (meaning the builder lines up the other sub-contractors and oversees the job) the builder will probably charge 10% to 12% for doing the footwork. If you are willing to do the footwork yourself you can save money on the project.

The next step is to decide what lumber yard to use. Your lumberyard, your builder, and Rick from Moose Log Homes, can help you be your own general contractor.

First, find a septic system contractor. You need a sanitary permit before you can get a building permit. You need an excavating contractor to install your driveway, dig your foundation and back-fill and finish-grade around your home. You need a concrete contractor to install your foundation. Other sub-contractors needed are plumbing, heating, electrical, water and well.
